Decades of sexual abuse of seminarians; Vatican-confirmed sentence to life of penitence
Marcial Maciel Degollado · Legion of Christ / Regnum Christi · priest · MX
Founder of the Legion of Christ. After multiple credible accusations of sexual abuse of seminarians dating to the 1940s, the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith conducted an investigation; in May 2006 the Vatican removed him from active ministry and required him to live a "reserved life of penitence and prayer." Subsequent disclosures established he had also fathered children and abused them.

The Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith… has decided — bearing in mind both the advanced age of the venerable Father Maciel and his delicate health — to forgo a canonical hearing and to invite the Father to a reserved life of prayer and penance, renouncing every public ministry.
