Convicted of indecent acts and assault against female followers; subsequent fraud conviction 2022
Eliezer Berland · Shuvu Bonim · rabbi · IL
Founder of the Shuvu Bonim community, a Breslov-Hasidic group in Jerusalem. After a multi-year extradition battle (Zimbabwe → South Africa → Netherlands → Israel) following 2013 complaints by female followers, Berland pleaded guilty in November 2016 at the Jerusalem District Court to two counts of indecent acts and one of assault against women in his congregation; sentenced to 18 months. A 2022 Tel Aviv Magistrate's Court conviction added eighteen months' imprisonment for fraud against followers (selling fake faith-healing remedies for cancer and infertility).
